Lennie & Co…Brand Profile

Spring is finally in the air which is really exciting as it means that not only will we (hopefully!) start to get some better weather, we also get to welcome new brands to the Peps & Pooks family. Our latest addition, the amazing Lennie & Co, launched her Spring 2017 range THIS WEEK!

Created by graphic designer and mother, Amy Walker, Lennie & Co is a collection of stylish kidswear that works hard and plays harder. Born in Amy’s coastal Devon home in 2015 and inspired by her own son Lennie, and their life by the seaside, we love the colourful and fresh unisex vibe of the range.

From super soft cotton T-shirts handprinted by Amy in her studio, to covetable mint graphic leggings and modern geo-printed sweatshirts, this is a durable and affordable collection made for kids to have fun in.

I personally love the vibrant mint hues and geometric patterns in Amys designs..oh and the fact that her “Bossy” print t-shirt instantly made me think of the bossy little person in my life! 😉

Here’s what Amy had to say about her exciting brand…

What was the inspiration behind Lennie & Co?
Lennie! I create things I could see him wearing. For the new collection I took colour inspiration from the coast, where we live. The soft hues and geometric lines cast by the shadows of the beach huts.

What’s your personal favourite item from the range?
The Ziggy pant. I love a patterned trouser. I find that if you don’t want leggings then there is little alternative that is patterned, which is why I designed the slim fit sweat pant.

What’s the best part of your job?
That I work on everything solely for the whole brand. Sometimes that can also be the worst! But it is literally all down to me. I love everything from designing the prints to hand printing the t-shirts to tinkering with my website. It’s so great when you can be passionate about something and give it your all.

In your opinion, what’s the biggest challenge of being your own boss?
I still work full time so time management is my biggest rival. At the moment I am working every night after Lenn goes to bed and we don’t get through the front door until 6pm. I have a very understanding boyfriend who happily sits next to me most evenings whilst I work.

What advice do you have for anyone looking to start their own business?
Be true to you. Design things you like or else how will you expect someone else to like it? Don’t copy, you’ll always be one step behind.

What has been the brands (and your) biggest achievement to date?
We won a Junior Design Award in 2016 coming Silver in the Best Emerging Brand category, which was pretty special. We also were featured on the front page of Gurgle magazine in Feb. Being recognised is always exciting.

What does 2017 hold for Lennie & Co?
Fun prints, and the introduction of colour. I love colour, it’s a very monochrome market at the moment, which I also love but someone told me at Dot to Dot that ‘colour is making a comeback’ so I’m going to hold onto that for 2017!

Muzzies…Brand Profile

This week our brand profile is dedicated to our newest kid on the block, stylish muslin and baby bib brand Muzzies…

A brand new brand for spring, Muzzies joined the Peps & Pooks family at the start of February and we are totally in love with the fresh and vibrant prints used on their designs.

Aside from the contemporary prints (which make me daydream about Summer!), my favourite thing about the Muzzie swaddle muslins are their versatility. Each swaddle muslin in a generous 120cm x 120cm which means they have a million and one different uses aside from the standard burp cloth. From soft and cosy swaddle to breastfeeding cover, impromptu bib to picnic blanket, change mat cover to make shift shade..I could go on, but you get the gist. Until I had Eva, I had no idea how much I’d come to rely on them during the early months, or how often i’d find myself saying  “JUST USE A MUSLIN!” to avert a baby related catastrophe, or probably more frequently, “WHERE’S THE *******  MUSLIN?!?” as they invariably go into hiding the second you need one! What I’m trying to say is, if there’s one thing you don’t want to leave the house without, it’s a swaddle muslin!

Another great thing about the Muzzie swaddle muslins is that they are all made using 100% cotton and printed using eco-friendly dyes, which makes them really soft and gentle on newborns skin and also REALLY washable…phew!

Anyway, enough from me, here are some words from Muzzies founder, and mum of two, Sarah…

What was the inspiration behind Muzzies?
I have worked in retail as a fashion buyer for over 10 years and always wanted to design and make product for myself. When I had my eldest daughter, she became very attached to a plain white, drab looking muzzie and this inspired me. So many babies become attached to muzzies as a comfort blanket, so why not make them lovely? It’s the perfect combination for my love of prints and babies!

What’s your personal favourite item from the range?
I love the geo confetti muslin as I am a huge fan of anything geometric. For the new SS17 range (launching mid March) it’s got to be a toss up between the ice lollies print and the watermelons in mint!

What’s the best part of your job?
I am a designer at heart, so for me…sitting down with my sketch book for an hour and sketching out some new design ideas is heaven!

In your opinion, what’s the biggest challenge of being your own boss?
I think it’s being a Mum as well as my own boss. The hardest, for me personally is trying to juggling everything – full time work, running a house and everything that comes in between!

What advice do you have for anyone looking to start their own business?
Definitely perseverance and determination. Don’t give up at the first hurdle and have realistic expectations. I view it as a long term lifestyle change. I want to work and create beautiful products, but I also want to pick up the kids from school and be there for them. Hopefully this will give me that flexibility. When the self doubt kicks in, just believe in yourself.

What has been the brands (and your) biggest achievement to date
I launched my new range of muzzies at Bubble London this February. I was super nervous to attend such a big trade show and chat to buyers from all over the world but it was truly great. The feedback was so positive. It’s just lovely to hear that people like what you are doing.

What does 2017 hold for Muzzies?
The launch of the new range – including swaddles and gift sets of a smaller size burp cloth, plus more exciting prints to come for AW17!

Sweetpea & the Chestnut Tree…Brand Profile

Sweetpea & the Chestnut Tree logo

Following on from last weeks profile of Lil’ Cubs, this week it’s the turn of Hackney based childrenswear brand Sweetpea & the Chestnut Tree.

Launched in 2016 by mum-of-one, Kitty, Sweetpea & the Chestnut Tree create beautifully co-ordinating dresses, unisex trousers, dungarees and sun hats for 0-2 year olds. Made from 100% cotton, all of Kittys garments are meticulously home sewn from her base in Hackney.

Oh, and did I mention that Kitty and I go way waaaaay back, having met when we were 12! I’m not going to embarrass either of us by including any photographic evidence, but  I will include a picture of the Little One looking exceptionally happy to be wearing a Sweetpea creation for her first birthday back in July.

What I love most about Sweetpea & the Chestnut Tree is the use of whimsical and botanical prints throughout the range which have the feel of being lifted straight out of the English countryside. Fabric selection and comfort is extremely important to Kitty which is why her dungarees are made using the softest needlecord around, and all of her trousers feature a roll down cuff that can be adjusted as your baby grows.

I could go on, but instead I’ll pass over to Kitty to tell you more about her brand…

What was the inspiration behind Sweetpea & The Chestnut Tree?
When my daughter Betty came along I couldn’t find what I wanted for her on the high street. There are lots of beautiful clothes of course, but I wanted simple shapes in whimsical printed cottons, and not pink! As a dressmaker and textile fanatic I already had an archive of gorgeous printed fabrics, and then I discovered the wonderful design house Lewis & Irene, who are producing very lovely, slightly retro style prints but still very modern. I use a lot of their fabrics.

What’s your personal favourite item from the range?
The Rabbits & Hares dress is my personal favourite. Rabbits are my spirit animal, and it was the first dress  I made for my daughter, Betty. I already had the fabric, which is from renowned textile house Makower,  and Betty’s Nana sewed it for me. Whenever Betty wore it she would get lots of compliments and it planted the seed which later became Sweetpea & the Chestnut Tree.

What’s the best part of your job?
Developing new styles, sourcing new prints, getting a fabric delivery, that sort of thing! I often use a contrast lining as a feature, or a print and a plain together, so I love seeing the finished article and how the fabrics work together. But the very best thing is receiving a photo of a baby wearing  Sweetpea & the Chestnut Tree –  so cute!

In your opinion, what’s the biggest challenge of being your own boss?
For me the challenge is to fit what I want to achieve around my other commitments. I still work in fashion, I’m a singer/songwriter, I’m a  mum…it can be difficult to shut those things out when you want to focus on your own business, which needs a lot of nurturing in order to grow. It’s a lot of work in the evenings and weekends, and nap times of course.

What advice do you have for anyone looking to start their own business?
Haha, ask me again in a few years’ time!

What has been the brands (and your) biggest achievement to date?
We had a really positive launch to the brand, with lots of custom orders placed in the run up to Christmas. Being stocked on Peps & Pooks was a highlight too!

What does 2017 hold for Sweetpea & The Chestnut Tree?
We hope to make a lot of new friends this year. A few new shapes will be coming in Summer 2017, and I’m taking a short course in textile design, because ultimately I would like to include my own print designs in the range. You can keep an eye on what we’re up to on Instagram @sweetpea_and_the_chestnut_tree

Sweetpea & The Chestnut Tree are RELOCATING to New Zealand this Spring so we’ll no longer be stocking their beautiful creations, however you can keep in touch with them via their Instagram page: @sweetpea_and_the_chestnut_tree. Good Luck guys, missing you already! Xx

Lil’ Cubs…Brand Profile

Here at Peps & Pooks we love the brands that we work with and put great care into choosing which brands to stock. Each brand is different and unique in its own way, so I thought it would be nice to introduce you to each of the brands and ask the owners some questions to help you get to know them a little better. First up, it’s Lil’ Cubs…

Lil’ Cubs is a colourful and exciting new brand which was launched in 2015 by mum of two, Tabitha. The range includes babygrows, leggings, muslins and swaddles, and the bold eye-catching designs really stand out in the crowd…So much so they have been spotted on the babes of celebrities including Tom and Giovanna Fletchers son Buddy, and Sally and Ronnie Woods twins…at a Spice Girls baby shower no less!..but more on that later.. 🙂

For me, one of the really great things about the Lil’ Cubs range is that all of the designs are completely unisex. This means they make great gifts for newborns as well as being perfect for passing down from sibling to sibling! The clothes are really reasonable priced too, with Lil’ Cubs leggings starting at £12 and babygrows costing £15.

Design wise, all of the Lil’ Cubs babygrows feature a brilliant zip fastening which is really difficult to find on the high street, and must save you LITERALLY HOURS when compared to battling with popper fastenings during the early days of eat, sleep, poo, repeat! All of the fabrics are printed using eco friendly dyes which makes the clothes really kind to babies delicate skin..and to the planet!

Anyway, enough from me, here’s what Tabitha had to say when I asked her some questions about her brand:

Lil Cubs

What was the inspiration behind Lil’ Cubs?
My children. My desire to be at home with them is my main focus. And my main inspiration for the prints comes from their colourful toys!

What’s your personal favourite item from the range?
I’m really excited about the new retro lollies in the SS17 range. It’ll be perfect for the summer and hopefully it will also strike a chord with parents, who doesn’t love a bit of retro?

What’s the best part of your job?
Being able to use my imagination and meeting like minded Mums doing the same thing.

In your opinion, what’s the biggest challenge of being your own boss?
Personally – childcare. I don’t have any! I don’t have a single minute to myself to get work done at the moment which is definitely a challenge!

What advice do you have for anyone looking to start their own business?
Go for it. It’s impossible to fail if you’ve tried.

What has been the brands (and your) biggest achievement to date?
I was over the moon to see Sally and Ronnie Wood’s twin girls in their Oranges & Lemons sleepsuits at Geri Halliwell Horner’s baby shower along with Emma Bunton. I actually squealed when I saw it!

What does 2017 have in store for Lil’ Cubs?
I have the Retro Lollies and Monkey prints coming this summer. I am also hoping to bring out a new item and then another Christmas print…
